Alfa Tec - Alfalfa Cubes

Made from locally grown premium alfalfa hay. These 7/8” Hay cubes can be fed as a dry supplement or as a complete forage replacement. Cubes can be fed soaked or dry based on personal preference. We recommend soaking for horses who bolt their feed or have dental issues. Feeding soaked cubes is also a good way—for horses that find added salt unpalatable—to decrease the salty taste of a meal without adding concentrate. The amount and type of soaked feed will depend on your horse’s nutritional needs. Partially soaked hay cubes, with a softened outside but dry core, are a risk for choke (esophageal obstruction) in horses and, therefore, cubes should be soaked thoroughly. These cubes are quite low in NSC’s at around 10.3 dry matter, so they take some pressure off buying a low sugar hay or often poor quality which can add chewing issues for older horses or outright impaction risk and some of those hays are very costly. If they cannot have grass, the cubes will help in the long run to balance their diet for sugars, add some buffering and some variety and they can be chewed easily.

Horses fed 1% of body weight in cubes daily sufficiently satisfy their roughage requirement without the messy stall and other waste associated with conventional baled hay. We feel the older horses feel better on a fair bit of mush and it certainly reduces the wear on the teeth.

Alfalfa has high calcium and electrolytes like potassium which have an alkalinizing ant acid effect. The trick is to feed some cubes about 1 hour before you ride. This provides a mat of alfalfa fiber on top of the stomach contents so when he rounds up or acid is splashed up it hits this mat.

For horses with teeth or gum issues soaking cubes is recommended and typically reduces manure as well. Horses will consume pellets as fast as they consume their grain, but the cubes take a while to chew, so they also cut down on boredom, which cuts down on negative behaviors. This also neutralizes any acid splashing up into the unprotected upper non-glandular area of the stomach protecting the lining of the gut. Horses that consume pellets “may” get a little looser manure because there simply is not the long fibre that can create a good architecture to the gut contents or true bulkiness. We have seen horses with colic surgery get loose on pellets, yet when we use the cubes; they give a good natural even intestinal tract movement and proper manure consistency. Cubes are not over processed and gives more forage action or effective fibre. Research shows feeding cubes will lower respirable challenges and assist with horses recovering from a respiratory infection or in a situation where air quality is under question.
